How AI decides who to recommend

We are Talker

Most brands that we talk to about AI search visibility are already doing something about it. They’re publishing articles to their own sites, refreshing and structuring their content, often following suggestions from GEO platforms flagging a content gap.

That’s only part of the story though, which is why many brands are also monitoring Reddit and Trustpilot, to see what other people are saying about their brand elsewhere.

But the real challenge that marketing and PR teams face is being able to identify what else they need to do to get their brand recommended by AI agents.

Most of the AI visibility tools people are using are built to create and optimize owned content, but it’s not the only thing that AI is weighing. At Talker, we’ve found it useful to think about the evidence AI encounters in three buckets: Entity, Reputation and Authority. And it’s the third one that makes the real difference, as we’ll get into here…

Entity

What does AI know about you?

This is what you say about yourself. Your own content published across every channel you control. Your website, your product pages, your press releases, your structured data. It’s the foundation, and it’s entirely in your hands.

Reputation

What does AI hear about you?

This is what people say about you, including sentiment. Reviews, forums, Reddit, Trustpilot, social media, aggregators, and the social conversations happening elsewhere. You don’t write this content, but you can usually see it, respond to it, and influence it over time.

Authority

What can AI verify about you?

This is what’s proven about you. Independent evidence that validates your claims. Earned media coverage. Expert commentary. Original research that other people choose to cite, repeat, or build on.

You may know the second of these as “sentiment”. We call this Reputation rather than sentiment, because sentiment usually reduces everything to a single score – positive, negative or neutral. This bucket is more nuanced as it takes into account the actual content of what’s said in the reviews, forums and conversations, and not just the verdict on how favorable they are.

Two of these you can build, one you have to earn

Entity and Reputation can both be built or managed from the inside. You write the content. You can influence or monitor the reviews. Authority doesn’t work that way, by definition, it has to come from someone else. A journalist, an expert, another outlet, choosing independently to validate and repeat what you’re saying.

That includes the research we build for our clients. A study sitting in a brand’s own newsroom is still just something that brand is saying about itself. It only becomes Authority once an independent journalist, expert, or outlet decides it’s worth repeating.

That’s the gap most AI visibility tools can’t close. They’re very good at helping a brand shape Entity and Reputation — the content, the structured data, monitoring reviews. But they can’t manufacture Authority, because a third party has to choose to grant it.

Built to earn authority

This is where Talker Pulse™ comes in. Our program is built to produce original research credible enough to earn coverage, and coverage strong and recent enough that AI treats it as authority, not promotion.

We’ve shifted the dial for the clients we’ve activated Pulse with so far, due to the precise architecture of our program and the credibility of the research-led outputs we have created together.

The next step is to make it compound — building on individual citations to become a primary source AI keeps coming back to. That’s the long-term goal, and it starts here.
